What this means practically: you cannot simply swap a conventional version of the same displacement engine into a hybrid and expect it to work with the hybrid control system. The ECU expects Atkinson cycle behavior, specific sensor outputs, and a different torque curve. Toyota 2ZR-FXE 1.8L Atkinson Inline-4 (Prius Gen 3 – Gen 4)

This is the most frequently requested used hybrid engine in the world. The 2ZR-FXE powered the third and fourth-generation Toyota Prius (ZVW30 and ZVW50 platforms) from 2009 onwards. It’s a 1.8-liter DOHC inline-4 operating on the Atkinson cycle, with a compression ratio of 13.0:1. Output is approximately 98 hp from the combustion engine alone, but that’s paired with a 60 kW electric motor for a combined system output of around 121 hp.

The 2ZR-FXE is electronically coupled to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (THS-II). The engine doesn’t use a traditional starter motor — MG1 (Motor Generator 1) starts the combustion engine. This means engine removal and installation requires specific procedures to disconnect it from the transaxle system correctly.

Toyota 2AR-FXE 2.5L Atkinson Inline-4 (Camry Hybrid / Avalon Hybrid)

The 2AR-FXE is the larger Atkinson cycle Toyota engine used in the Camry Hybrid and Avalon Hybrid. 2.5 liters, DOHC, Atkinson cycle, compression ratio of 12.5:1. The combustion engine alone produces around 156 hp. Combined with the THS-II electric motor, system output in the Camry Hybrid is approximately 200 hp.

This engine is more straightforward to source than the smaller 2ZR-FXE because the donor vehicle base is larger. Camry Hybrids were sold in high volumes in North America, Japan, Australia, and the Middle East. Used hybrid engines of the 2AR-FXE type are regularly available in our stock at competitive prices.

Toyota A25A-FXS 2.5L Inline-4 (RAV4 Hybrid / Camry Hybrid 2018+)

The newer A25A-FXS is Toyota’s TNGA-based 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine, used in the fifth-generation Camry Hybrid and the RAV4 Hybrid from 2019. Compression ratio of 14.0:1 — one of the highest in any mass-production engine. The combustion engine produces 176 hp, with combined system output of 218 hp in the Camry Hybrid and 219 hp in the RAV4 Hybrid.

This is a newer engine in the used market, so mileage on available units tends to be moderate. We carry A25A-FXS units sourced from insurance write-offs where the engine ran perfectly and the vehicle was totaled due to body damage. Honda LFA 2.0L Atkinson Inline-4 (Accord Hybrid / CR-V Hybrid)

Honda’s two-motor hybrid system (i-MMD) uses a dedicated Atkinson cycle engine that doesn’t drive the wheels directly through a conventional gearbox. Instead, it primarily generates electricity that drives the electric motor, with a lock-up clutch for highway direct drive. The LFA engine (used in the 10th-gen Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid) is a 2.0-liter inline-4 with variable valve timing, producing around 143 hp from the combustion side.

Combined system output in the Accord Hybrid is 212 hp. The Honda system is mechanically different from Toyota’s — it’s more like a series hybrid at low speeds, which has efficiency implications and also implications for how the engine is used (it sees extended generation runs rather than stop-start cycles like the Prius system).

Specs: 2.0L, inline-4, DOHC, Atkinson cycle, VTEC, 143 hp (combustion), ~212 hp combined system, compatible with Accord Hybrid 10th gen (2018–2022), CR-V Hybrid (2020–present).

Hyundai/Kia G4FJ Nu 1.6L GDI Atkinson Inline-4 (Ioniq / Niro Hybrid)

Hyundai and Kia use the G4FJ 1.6-liter Atkinson cycle engine in their hybrid lineup — Ioniq Hybrid, Niro Hybrid, and certain Tucson/Sportage hybrid variants. It produces approximately 104 hp from the combustion side, with the 32 kW electric motor adding to give a combined output around 139 hp in the Ioniq Hybrid.

The Korean hybrid approach is competitive — the Ioniq was consistently at the top of real-world fuel economy comparisons in its class. The G4FJ engine itself is robust. Used hybrid engines of this type are competitively priced given the volume of Niro and Ioniq units sold globally.

Specs: 1.6L, inline-4, DOHC, GDI, Atkinson cycle, 6-speed DCT paired system (ISG), 104 hp (combustion), ~139 hp combined, compatible with Ioniq Hybrid (2017–2022), Niro Hybrid (2016–present), Tucson Hybrid (some markets).

Ford 2.5L Atkinson Inline-4 (Escape Hybrid / Fusion Hybrid)

Ford’s first-generation hybrid system used a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle inline-4 in the Escape Hybrid (2005–2012) and the Fusion Hybrid (2010–2012). Output is approximately 156 hp from the combustion engine. The system operated similarly to the Toyota THS in concept — a power-split device with two motor generators.

These are older hybrid units now, but there are still a significant number of Escape and Fusion Hybrids in service worldwide — they were popular, they’re built well, and they hold value among buyers who like the fuel economy.
