Used Truck Engines: What to Know Before You Buy

Truck engines work harder than most people give them credit for. Towing loads, running in extreme heat, idling for hours at job sites, racking up mileage fast — by the time most truck engines give out, they’ve earned it. So when you need a replacement, you want a used truck engine that’s been put through the same rigorous expectations as the one it’s replacing.

That’s exactly what we sell at Best Auto Motors. Our used truck engines are pulled from clean, inspected donor vehicles, tested for compression and oil pressure, and documented before they ship. We carry engines for Ford, GM, Ram, Toyota, Nissan, and more — in stock and ready to go.

This guide covers the engines we stock, what specs matter for trucks specifically, and how to make sure you’re getting the right used truck engine for your application.

Why Truck Engines Need More Scrutiny

A used car engine and a used truck engine aren’t the same buying decision. Trucks are often used as work tools. They tow. They haul. They sometimes run at high RPM under load for extended periods. That means when you’re buying a used truck engine, you need to pay closer attention to oil pressure history, rod bearing condition, and thermal fatigue than you would with a typical passenger car engine.

We test every used truck engine in inventory with this in mind. Compression testing is standard. We also check bearing surfaces where accessible and inspect for signs of detonation damage on pistons — common in tow-heavy applications where coolant or fuel management wasn’t ideal.

Popular Used Truck Engines We Carry

Here are the most commonly requested used truck engines we have in stock. These cover the majority of light-duty and medium-duty applications worldwide.

GM 5.3L Vortec V8 (LM7 / LC9 / LMG)

One of the most popular used truck engines in the market. Used in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 from 1999 to 2013, plus Silverado 2500 in select years. Also found in Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Avalanche.

  • Displacement: 5.3L (325 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, OHV (pushrod)
  • Output: 270–320 hp / 315–340 lb-ft torque
  • Bore x Stroke: 3.78″ x 3.62″
  • Compression ratio: 9.5:1 (Gen III) / 9.6:1 (Gen IV)

We stock this used truck engine in 60,000–140,000 mile range. Compression tests consistently show 140–165 PSI on well-maintained examples. This is a strong, reliable platform.

Ford 5.0L Coyote V8

Used in F-150 from 2011 to present. This is one of the best modern used truck engines on the market — strong, efficient, and built to handle both street driving and moderate towing.

  • Displacement: 5.0L (302 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, DOHC
  • Output: 360–450 hp / 380–420 lb-ft torque depending on generation
  • Bore x Stroke: 3.63″ x 3.65″
  • Compression ratio: 11.0:1

The Coyote is a precision-built engine. When buying this as a used truck engine, we verify timing chain condition specifically — a known wear item at higher mileage.

Ford 6.2L Boss V8

Available in F-150 SVT Raptor and F-250 Super Duty from 2011 onward. This is a heavy-duty used truck engine option built for serious work loads.

  • Displacement: 6.2L (379 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, SOHC
  • Output: 385 hp / 405 lb-ft torque
  • Towing capacity (factory): up to 11,300 lbs

GM 6.0L Vortec V8 (LQ4 / LQ9)

The workhorse of GM’s truck lineup. Used in Silverado 2500 HD, Sierra 2500 HD, Silverado 3500, and Express van platforms.

  • Displacement: 6.0L (364 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, OHV
  • Output: 300–345 hp / 360–380 lb-ft torque
  • Bore x Stroke: 4.00″ x 3.62″

This used truck engine is a popular choice for fleet operators and heavy towing applications. We typically stock these at 80,000–160,000 miles, and the LQ4 and LQ9 both respond well to compression testing — good ones show 150–165 PSI.

Ram 5.7L Hemi V8 (Eagle)

Found in Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups as well as Durango and Grand Cherokee. One of the most recognizable used truck engines in the market.

  • Displacement: 5.7L (345 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, OHV
  • Output: 345–395 hp / 375–410 lb-ft torque depending on year
  • Compression ratio: 9.6:1 (early) / 10.5:1 (Gen III)

The Hemi is a solid used truck engine option but requires a careful check of the variable valve timing (MDS) system at higher mileage. We inspect lifters and rocker arms before approving any Hemi for sale.

Toyota 4.0L 1GR-FE V6

Found in Tacoma (2005–2015), 4Runner (2003–2009), and FJ Cruiser. A durable mid-size used truck engine with a reputation for longevity.

  • Displacement: 4.0L (244 cu in)
  • Configuration: V6, DOHC
  • Output: 236–270 hp / 266–278 lb-ft torque
  • Compression ratio: 10.4:1

Nissan 4.0L VQ40DE V6

Standard engine in Nissan Frontier and Pathfinder from 2005 to 2021. A smooth, reliable used truck engine choice for mid-size truck buyers.

  • Displacement: 4.0L (241 cu in)
  • Configuration: V6, DOHC
  • Output: 261–265 hp / 281 lb-ft torque

Diesel Used Truck Engines

For heavy-duty applications, used truck engines in the diesel segment are the standard choice. Here are the platforms we stock:

Cummins 6.7L ISB (2007–Present)

Standard in Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. One of the best used truck engines for commercial and heavy towing use.

  • Displacement: 6.7L (408 cu in)
  • Configuration: Inline-6 diesel
  • Output: 350–400 hp / 650–900 lb-ft torque depending on year and tune
  • Compression ratio: 16.2:1

GM 6.6L Duramax LML / L5P

Used in Silverado HD and Sierra HD from 2011 to present. A top-tier used truck engine for towing and fleet use.

  • Displacement: 6.6L
  • Configuration: V8 diesel, turbocharged
  • Output: 397–445 hp / 765–910 lb-ft torque

How to Choose the Right Used Truck Engine

The most important step is matching the engine exactly. Year, make, model, engine code, and transmission type all affect compatibility. A used truck engine from a 2010 Silverado 1500 with a 4L60E automatic doesn’t automatically match a 2010 Silverado 1500 with a 4L80E.

Send us your VIN. It’s the cleanest way to confirm compatibility before you order. Our team will pull matching used truck engines from inventory and share the compression data and photos. You pick what works, and we ship.

What About Mileage?

Truck engines are built to last. A well-maintained used truck engine with 120,000 miles can have plenty of life left. What matters more than mileage is how the miles were put on. Highway miles on a well-maintained engine are far less damaging than city miles with irregular oil changes.

We categorize our used truck engines by mileage tier:

  • Under 80,000 miles — Low mileage, premium tier
  • 80,000–130,000 miles — Mid-range, most common
  • 130,000–180,000 miles — Value tier, tested thoroughly

Our low mileage used engines page is worth checking if you’re looking for the lowest-mileage options across all categories.

Warranty and Support

Every used truck engine we sell comes with a warranty. Standard coverage is 30 days, with extended options on low-mileage units. The warranty covers internal mechanical failure, not installation damage or overheating from coolant system issues. If you have a problem, call us. We don’t disappear after the sale.

Shipping Our Used Truck Engines

We ship used truck engines worldwide via freight. Truck engines are heavy — most V8 assemblies weigh 400–600 lbs. They ship palletized, strapped, and shrink-wrapped. Intake and exhaust ports are capped. Timing covers are sealed. The engine shows up in the same condition it left our facility.

Domestic freight typically runs 3–5 business days. International orders include full export documentation and customs paperwork. Reach out for a freight quote to your country.
