Used Diesel Engines: Why Diesel Buyers Think Differently
Diesel engine buyers aren’t shopping the same way a sedan owner is. They need torque. They need durability. They need an engine that can take a beating on long hauls, idle at a job site, or pull weight day after day without complaint. A used diesel engine that hasn’t been properly inspected can look fine on the outside and cost you everything once it’s in the bay.
At Best Auto Motors, we stock used diesel engines for trucks, vans, commercial vehicles, and agricultural equipment. Every engine goes through a documented inspection process before it’s listed. You get compression data, condition photos, and verified mileage — not a listing with a generic stock photo and no real information.
This is a complete guide to what we stock, what to look for in any used diesel engine purchase, and why the specs on these engines matter more than most buyers realize.
What Makes Diesel Engine Inspection Different
Diesel engines operate at much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines. A typical gasoline engine runs 9:1 to 11:1 compression. A used diesel engine runs anywhere from 14:1 to 23:1. That higher compression is what creates the heat needed for combustion without a spark plug — but it also means any weak point in the engine is under much greater stress.
Here’s what we specifically inspect on every used diesel engine:
Compression Testing (Diesel-Specific)
Diesel compression testing uses different tools and different standards than gasoline testing. We’re looking for 350–500 PSI per cylinder depending on the engine family. Low compression on a diesel usually points to worn piston rings, worn cylinder walls, or injector wash-down from excessive fuel — all serious issues. No used diesel engine with a failing cylinder passes our inspection.
Injector Condition
Bad injectors can destroy a diesel engine fast. They wash cylinder walls with raw fuel, lower compression, and cause piston damage. Before listing any used diesel engine, we assess injector spray pattern evidence and look for carbon buildup patterns that indicate injector problems.
Head Gasket Integrity
The high-compression environment of a used diesel engine puts enormous stress on the head gasket, especially in applications with intercooled turbocharging. We do a coolant combustion test and check for signs of exhaust gas in the coolant on every engine before it’s approved for sale.
Turbocharger Condition
Most modern used diesel engines are turbocharged. We spin-test the turbo and check for shaft play, seal leaks, and oil contamination in the compressor housing. A failed turbo that’s been running can push oil into the intake manifold and cause runaway diesel syndrome — a condition where the engine uses its own oil as fuel and can’t be shut off without mechanical intervention.
Popular Used Diesel Engines in Our Inventory
Cummins 5.9L ISB (12-Valve and 24-Valve)
This is one of the most requested used diesel engines in the world. Used in Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups from 1989 to 2007, the 5.9L Cummins has a reputation for absurd longevity and tunability.
- Displacement: 5.9L (359 cu in)
- Configuration: Inline-6 diesel
- Output (stock): 160–325 hp / 400–610 lb-ft torque depending on year and variant
- Compression ratio: 17.5:1 (12V) / 16.3:1 (24V)
- Turbocharger: Holset HX35W (12V) / Holset HY35W (24V)
Our used diesel engines in this family typically come in at 100,000–250,000 miles. That may sound high, but a properly maintained 5.9L Cummins hitting 250,000 miles is far from done. We compression test every unit at 350+ PSI target and verify turbo condition.
Cummins 6.7L ISB (2007–Present)
The current Ram diesel. More power than the 5.9L, with emissions compliance built in. This used diesel engine is the standard choice for modern Ram HD trucks.
- Displacement: 6.7L (408 cu in)
- Configuration: Inline-6 diesel
- Output: 350–400 hp / 650–900 lb-ft torque (varies by year)
- Compression ratio: 16.2:1
- Turbocharger: Variable geometry Holset
GM 6.6L Duramax LB7 / LLY / LBZ / LMM / LML
GM’s workhorse used diesel engine across generations of Silverado HD and Sierra HD. Arguably the most common diesel in the North American commercial fleet market.
- Displacement: 6.6L (403 cu in)
- Configuration: V8 diesel, turbocharged
- Output: 300–397 hp / 520–765 lb-ft torque (varies by generation)
- Compression ratio: 17.5:1
- Key variants: LB7 (2001–2004), LLY (2004–2005), LBZ (2006–2007), LMM (2007–2010), LML (2011–2016)
We stock all Duramax variants. The LB7 has a known injector issue from the factory; our used diesel engines in that family come with documented injector service records where available or a clear note if service is recommended at installation.
Ford 6.7L Power Stroke (2011–Present)
The first Power Stroke diesel engine designed entirely by Ford (previous versions were Navistar-built). Used in F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks.
- Displacement: 6.7L (406 cu in)
- Configuration: V8 diesel, compound turbocharged
- Output: 390–475 hp / 735–1,050 lb-ft torque depending on year
- Compression ratio: 16.2:1
- EGR and DEF system: Yes (2011+)
This is a strong used diesel engine but requires inspection of the EGR cooler and oil cooler — both known failure points on early production units. We address both during inspection.
Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1994–2003)
The most beloved diesel truck engine in Ford’s history. Simple, reliable, extremely tuneable, and built before the DPF/DEF era. Demand for this used diesel engine has stayed strong for decades because of how long-lived and repairable it is.
- Displacement: 7.3L (444 cu in)
- Configuration: V8 diesel, turbocharged
- Output: 210–275 hp / 425–525 lb-ft torque
- Compression ratio: 17.5:1
- Injection system: HEUI (hydraulically actuated electronic unit injection)
Toyota 1KD-FTV 3.0L Diesel
One of the most popular used diesel engines globally outside North America. Found in Hilux, Land Cruiser Prado, HiAce, and Fortuner models. Widely used across Australia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Diesel Engine Specs That Matter When Buying Used
Beyond just confirming the part number, here are the specs worth understanding when comparing used diesel engines:
Compression Ratio
Higher compression ratios on a used diesel engine generally indicate a design built for higher torque output. They also mean more wear potential on ring seals over time. Always request compression test data for the specific engine you’re buying.
Injection System Type
Older used diesel engines use mechanical injection (simple, robust, repairable anywhere). Modern ones use common-rail direct injection (CRDI), which offers better efficiency and power but requires higher fuel pressure and cleaner fuel. If you’re in a region with inconsistent fuel quality, the injection system type matters for long-term reliability.
Turbo Type
Fixed-geometry turbochargers are simpler and more reliable. Variable geometry turbos (VGT) offer better low-RPM response but have more failure points. Most modern used diesel engines above 300 hp use VGT. Ask about turbo condition specifically — replacements can be expensive.
Emissions Equipment
Post-2007 used diesel engines in North America typically include DPF (diesel particulate filter) and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Post-2010 additions include SCR (selective catalytic reduction) and DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) systems. These add complexity and maintenance requirements. Know what your application needs before ordering.
Pricing on Used Diesel Engines
Diesel engines generally cost more than their gasoline equivalents because of the stronger block, higher-pressure fuel systems, and turbocharger components. Our used diesel engine pricing ranges roughly as follows:
- Compact car diesels (VW TDI, BMW diesel, etc.): $1,200 – $2,500
- Mid-size truck diesels (Toyota 1KD, Isuzu 4JJ1): $1,800 – $3,500
