Used Gasoline Engines for Sale – Every Make, Every Model, Ready to Ship

Used Gasoline Engines: The Most Common Replacement Decision in the World

Every day, millions of gasoline-powered cars and trucks around the world hit a point where the engine is done. Sometimes it’s catastrophic — a spun bearing or a thrown rod. Sometimes it’s gradual — rising oil consumption, low compression, or overheating damage that’s gone too far to fix cost-effectively. Either way, the solution is usually the same: find a quality used gasoline engine and get the vehicle back running.

At Best Auto Motors, we sell used gasoline engines for passenger cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans — every make, every common model, worldwide. Every engine in our inventory is compression-tested, inspected for leaks and damage, and documented with real photos before we list it. You’re not buying blind.

This guide covers the most common used gasoline engines we stock, what the important specs mean, and how to make sure you’re ordering the right unit for your vehicle.

Why Gasoline Engine Buyers Need to Be Specific

“I need a 2.5L four-cylinder” isn’t enough information. Multiple manufacturers make 2.5L engines that are not interchangeable. And even within the same brand, the same displacement can have different fuel systems, compression ratios, variable valve timing configurations, and mounting points across model years.

A used gasoline engine purchase has to match on several levels: displacement, configuration, generation, fuel system type, emissions standards, and transmission compatibility. We confirm all of that before shipping. Give us your VIN and we’ll handle the cross-referencing.

Most Commonly Replaced Gasoline Engines

Honda 2.4L K24 Series (K24A, K24Z, K24W)

This is one of the most widely requested used gasoline engines in the compact and mid-size segment. Found in Honda Accord (2003–2017), CR-V (2002–2016), Element (2003–2011), TSX (2004–2008), and Acura RDX (2007–2012).

  • Displacement: 2.4L (144 cu in)
  • Configuration: Inline-4, DOHC
  • Output: 155–205 hp / 161–182 lb-ft torque depending on variant
  • Compression ratio: 9.7:1 – 11.0:1 depending on variant

Healthy compression on this used gasoline engine typically shows 170–185 PSI per cylinder. We stock K24 units regularly due to high demand.

Toyota 2GR-FE 3.5L V6

Arguably the most reliable V6 used gasoline engine on the market. Used in Camry (2007+), Avalon (2005+), RAV4 (2006–2012), Highlander (2008+), Sienna (2011+), and several Lexus models (ES350, RX350, GS350, IS350).

  • Displacement: 3.5L (213 cu in)
  • Configuration: V6, DOHC
  • Output: 268–301 hp / 248–267 lb-ft torque
  • Compression ratio: 10.8:1
  • VVT-i: Yes, dual

This engine regularly tests at 160–175 PSI per cylinder even at 120,000–150,000 miles. It’s one of our strongest-performing used gasoline engines in terms of compression consistency across the inventory.

GM LS 5.3L V8 (LM7 / LC9 / LMG)

The LS engine family is the most popular V8 platform for performance builds and truck replacements. The 5.3L is the entry point and the most commonly replaced used gasoline engine in GM’s truck lineup.

  • Displacement: 5.3L (325 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, OHV
  • Output: 270–320 hp / 315–340 lb-ft torque
  • Compression ratio: 9.5:1 – 9.6:1
  • AFM (Active Fuel Management): Yes on later Gen IV variants

Ford 5.0L Coyote V8 (Gen 1, 2, 3)

One of the best modern V8s available as a used gasoline engine. Used in F-150 (2011+), Mustang GT (2011+), and Boss 302 (2012–2013).

  • Displacement: 5.0L (302 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, DOHC
  • Output: 360–480 hp depending on generation
  • Compression ratio: 11.0:1
  • Ti-VCT: Yes, dual independent

We carry all three generations of the Coyote as used gasoline engines. We inspect timing chain tensioners specifically on all Gen 1 units before listing.

Toyota 2JZ-GTE 3.0L Inline-6 (Turbocharged)

The most famous used gasoline engine in the performance import world. Found in the Toyota Supra (1993.5–2002) and Aristo (1991–2004) in twin-turbo form.

  • Displacement: 3.0L (182 cu in)
  • Configuration: Inline-6, DOHC, twin-turbocharged
  • Output (stock): 276 hp / 318 lb-ft torque (JDM spec)
  • Compression ratio: 8.5:1
  • Block material: Cast iron (extremely strong for high-power builds)

We source 2JZ units primarily as JDM imports. Mileage is typically lower than domestic equivalents. This is a premium used gasoline engine and priced accordingly.

Chevrolet 6.2L LS3 V8

The high-performance variant in the LS family. Found in Camaro SS (2010–2015), Corvette C6 (2008–2013), and some G8 GT variants. A popular swap engine and a sought-after used gasoline engine for performance builds.

  • Displacement: 6.2L (376 cu in)
  • Configuration: V8, OHV
  • Output: 426–436 hp / 420 lb-ft torque
  • Compression ratio: 10.7:1

BMW N54 / N55 3.0L Inline-6 (Turbocharged)

The engine behind the E90/E92 335i, F30 335i/435i, and many other BMW models. One of the most mod-friendly turbocharged used gasoline engines in the luxury performance segment.

  • Displacement: 3.0L (183 cu in)
  • Configuration: Inline-6, DOHC, twin-turbocharged (N54) / single-turbo (N55)
  • Output: 300–320 hp / 300–332 lb-ft torque (stock)
  • Direct injection: Yes
  • VANOS: Double

We check HPFP condition, injector spray quality, and valve carbon deposits on every N54/N55 listed as a used gasoline engine. These engines need clean documentation to be listed.

Subaru EJ257 2.5L Flat-4 (Turbocharged)

The engine in Subaru WRX STI (2004–2021) and Legacy GT. A distinctive used gasoline engine because of its horizontally opposed (boxer) layout.

What to Look for in Any Used Gasoline Engine

Compression Numbers

This is the single most important data point for a used gasoline engine. Healthy compression for most gasoline engines falls between 135 and 185 PSI, with less than 10% variance between cylinders. We test every engine and share the results. If a seller can’t give you cylinder-by-cylinder numbers, that’s a red flag.

Oil Consumption History

A used gasoline engine that burns a quart of oil every 500 miles is not a good engine. We look for carbon fouling on the spark plug threads and oil deposits around the PCV system during inspection to flag any oil consumption concern before the engine ships.

Coolant Contamination

A blown head gasket leaves traces — white emulsification under the oil cap, rust in coolant passages, or combustion gases in the coolant. We check for all three on every used gasoline engine we inspect. An engine with a compromised head gasket does not get listed.

VVT / VVL System Condition

Most modern used gasoline engines have variable valve timing. The solenoids and phasers that control these systems are oil-dependent. If the engine has a history of dirty oil or infrequent oil changes, these components wear faster. We check phaser condition on timing-covered engines and note any concerning wear.

Long Block vs Short Block: What You’re Actually Buying

When you buy a used gasoline engine from us, you have two primary options:

Long Block: Includes the engine block, cylinder heads, camshafts, valvetrain, and timing components. Does not include the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, alternator, or accessories. This is the most common format for engine replacements.

Short Block: Includes only the block, crankshaft, pistons, and connecting rods. Used when you’re rebuilding with fresh heads. Less common for simple drop-in replacements but useful for rebuild projects.

Let us know which you need when ordering, and we’ll make sure the used gasoline engine ships with the right assembly level.
